Supporting Learning and Development at The Ark Pre-School

At The Ark Pre-School, we believe that play is the foundation of young children’s learning and development. Through play, children explore, discover, and make sense of the world around them. Whether through imaginative role play, hands-on activities, or conversations with peers and adults, children learn best when they are actively engaged and having fun.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS 2021) guidance to plan a rich variety of play-based experiences that support children’s development across all seven areas of learning. Some activities are led by the children themselves, encouraging independence and creativity. Others are guided by adults to support deeper learning and extend their ideas. Together, these experiences help children make meaningful progress in a nurturing environment.

Characteristics of Effective Learning

We recognise that every child is unique, and how they learn is just as important as what they learn. We support the three core characteristics of effective learning set out in the EYFS:

  • Playing and exploring – children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’
  • Active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties
  • Creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things

By embracing these characteristics, we help children become confident, motivated, and curious learners.

Our Approach

Learning at The Ark is centred around the four guiding principles of the EYFS:

  • Every child is a Unique Child
  • Children learn through Positive Relationships
  • Children thrive in Enabling Environments
  • Children develop and learn in Different Ways and at Different Rates

The EYFS framework is divided into seven areas of learning:

Prime Areas:

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development

Specific Areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Through purposeful play in all of these areas, we help children develop the knowledge and skills they need to prepare for school and life.

Observation and Assessment

We observe children closely as they play, noting their interests, achievements, and next steps. This insight helps us plan meaningful activities and tailor learning to each child’s needs. We also use photographs and observations to build each child’s online Learning Journal through FAMLY, which we share regularly with parents.

We value our partnership with families and encourage parents to contribute to their child’s learning journey by sharing insights from home. Regular assessment summaries and transition reports support each stage of development, including the Two-Year Progress Check and preparation for school.

At The Ark Pre-School, we see each child’s time with us as the beginning of a lifelong learning journey. By building confidence, nurturing curiosity, and promoting joyful play, we help your child take their first steps into education with enthusiasm and a love of learning.
